Not quite, but his much acclaimed American Crusade to educate Schools, Governing Bodies and Families appears to be rubbing off here in Tenerife. Just recently 3 Primary schools in Adeje have agreed from next term to take part in this pioneering Scheme.

The Thao-Salud programme is a pioneering project in the islands and works through the promotion of healthy lifestyle choices by children from three to 12 years of age.  Children who follow the programme won’t just be working to keep their weight within acceptable limits, but also giving their developing bodies the tools they need to avoid diseases and illnesses associated with obesity.   They will learn about food groups, what is good to eat, the benefits of physical activity particularly as part of their time in school, and all with a touch of fun.  Kids will be encouraged to take more exercise and not just within sporting limits but also during play and games with their friends, as well as learning about the benefits of a healthier lifestyle within a social setting. There will also be regular assessments carried out within schools with children who are taking part in the programme having weight and measurements monitored.

Last Friday brought to the end a 6 month battle between shopkeepers and the Local Government over opening hour restrictions. The issue has been over declaring the City Center of Santa Cruz as a designated Tourist Area, which in effect makes the area exempt from restricted opening hours.

The number of visitors visiting the Capital on a daily basis have increased enormously over the last twelve months, especially with the growing number of Cruise Liners visiting the port for their daily stopovers. The new Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez said the decision was a massive boost to Santa Cruz, and would inject new life into the Centre, especially on Sundays.

The worlds greatest international windsurfers are coming to town over the next few days, in preparation for the second round of the World Cup Series, which starts in El Medano on Thursday 14th July for one week.This huge sporting event will attract worldwide attention from the media and TV, as well as up to 1,000 spectators each day.

Despite the perfect conditions this resort has to offer, this is the first time in 15 years that the event has been staged in El Medano. With over 45,000 euros in prize money on offer, the competition will no doubt be fierce.

In addition to the International competitors, there are 3 places up for grabs for local windsurfers, who will compete in in preliminary rounds on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
